The California Department of Insurance granted 5.9million to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office to investigation and prosecute workers’ compensation insurance fraud. A recent article in the San Clemente Patch noted that the this grant was part of $32 million in grants awarded statewide. Nearly 3,000 investigations were conducted in 2010 which led to 666 convictions for fraudulent claims, according to the Insurance Department. Workers’ compensation fraud places a significant added burden on the insurance system. Insurance Commissioner Dave Jones stated that “we have an obligation to provide protection to injured workers who require both care and compensation so they are able to get back to work as quickly as possible, while also rooting out fraud perpetrated by those seeking to game the system.” http://sanclemente.patch.com/articles/d-a-gets-grant-to-fight-workers-comp-fraud
